CBD Shows Great Promise for Fibro Sufferers

CBD Shows Great Promise for Fibro Sufferers

February 21, 2021

Recent studies have shown that hemp oil could provide relief to fibro sufferers. Since there have not been any successful cures yet found for the syndrome, this news has many patients looking excitedly towards further research on the method. Below, we discuss what fibro is (including the wide range of symptoms it produces), as well as delve into two major studies conducted on the effects CBD has on the syndrome.

What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia, commonly known as simply fibro, is a chronic pain syndrome which presents with a wide array of other symptoms (discussed below). The pain is present in all four quadrants of the body and can significantly impact the quality of life for patients. So much so that many living with the disorder are unable to work or undertake normal daily activities.

What makes fibro so difficult to live with is that the medical community has not yet found what causes it. Without knowing the root cause of the syndrome, it has been difficult to pinpoint any potential cures - or even ways to manage the disabling effects... until now, of course, when two different research studies have linked the use of CBD or hemp oil with a reduction in fibro symptoms.

Fibro Symptoms

Although the primary complaint in fibromyalgia suffers is pain, it can present with a wide range of other symptoms. Among these are:

  • Headaches
  • Inability to concentrate or forgetfulness (known as "Fibro Fog")
  • Tender points
  • Insomnia
  • Difficulty staying asleep
  • Sleeping too much
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Numbness, tingling, or burning in the extremities (sometimes including the face)
  • Stiffness upon waking
  • Painful menstrual cramps (in women)
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (as a comorbid condition)

Causes

Medical professionals have not yet figured out what exactly causes fibro. It is highly suspected that genetics play a factor because the syndrome tends to affect multiple members of the same family. The older you get the more likely a diagnosis is, and those who have autoimmune diseases are at a much higher risk of fibro.

Studies on Fibro & CBD

There have been two studies done on the correlation between hemp oil and Fibromyalgia. Both studies showed that CBD does have at least a moderately positive impact on patients. The details of these studies can be found below.

-GW Pharma Study

A study carried out by US-based GW Pharmaceuticals aimed to find if there was a link between an endocannabinoid system (ECS) deficiency and certain syndromes. Among these were not only fibromyalgia but also migraines and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The conclusion of the study was that there was, indeed, biochemical and clinical patterns which suggested these syndromes were linked to deficiencies in the ECS. These similarities suggest that CBD oil could be a potential cure for several mysterious syndromes that the medical community have yet to find cause for.

-Barcelona Study

A second study was conducted by the human pharmacology and neurosciences unit at the Institut de Recerca del Mar in Barcelona, Spain. The aim was to see whether oral or inhalant CBD would lessen the primary symptoms of fibromyalgia.

The results stated that there was a significant reduction in some primary fibro symptoms. These included the pain and stiffness associated with the syndrome, as well as an increase in general relaxation and wellbeing.

What This Means

The results of these studies alone are not enough to conclusively state that CBD oil is a cure for fibro. They are enough, however, to prove that CBD taken orally or inhaled through a vaporizing device can help to manage the pain and anxiety associated with the syndrome.
