CBD SHOWS PROMISE AGAINST ALZHEIMER'S

February 21, 2021

We are living in a world of acronyms: WWW (World Wide Web), ISP (Internet Service Provider), and CBD (cannabidiol) oil. CBD oil is the newest addition to modern lingo, thanks to studies of its effects on chronic health issues. Alzheimer's is one of those issues, and CBD oil shows great promise in helping people maintain their mental faculties. Here's why:

WHAT IS ALZHEIMER'S?

Alzheimer's is a form of dementia, an umbrella of conditions that involve mental deterioration over time. They're all characterized by a loss of higher cognitive thinking and motor skills with the following symptoms:

  • irritability and aggression
  • insomnia
  • mood swings, depression, and apathy
  • loss of coordination, appetite, and speech
  • confusion and memory loss (beginning with long-term)
  • impairment of taste and smell

CBD oil can serve as a simple supplement that either treats or prevents memory and motor loss. It has helped many sufferers manage their symptoms. It can even do what was once thought impossible: repair brain damage.

HOW CBD OIL PROTECTS GREY MATTER

A loss of neurons in the basal forebrain or cerebral cortex causes Alzheimer's and senile dementia. In layman's terms, this means damage in the areas of the brain responsible for consciousness, learning, and memory. However, some researchers have concluded that it is not distinct from the normal aging process.

So where does CBD oil come in? There is research showing that it actually works against brain aging as well as brain damage. It's also useful for appetite, nausea, pain and anxiety, all of which are physical and mental ailments which can interfere with one's thinking skills.

Believe it or not, the US patent for cannabinoids states that cannabinoids are useful as both neuroprotectants and antioxidants. Antioxidants are important for prevention and repair of neurodegenerative diseases as well as strokes and hearing loss. Inflammation damages nerves and prevents neurogenesis (the production of new neurons) which we need for creating new memories. It's also a sign of aging after age 30.

A possible cause of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's is iron toxicity, and CBD prevents the cell death it causes. Another is glutamate toxicity, which overstimulates cells to the point of death; CBD works against it in a protective as well as a regenerative capacity after traumatic brain injury. And 2-5 mg per day added to existing anti-epilepsy medication can decrease seizures by over 30%. This gives CBD a unique classification as both neuroprotectant and antioxidant.

FULL SPECTRUM CBD OIL VERSUS ISOLATE

CBD oil can come from either hemp or marijuana plants, the difference being that hemp contains minor amounts of THC. Isolate is 99% pure CBD oil, while full spectrum has other cannabinoids (CBN, CBL, and CBCVA) as well as terpenes (pinene and limonene) and some THC. One of the most popular ways of consuming CBD oil is as a sublingual tincture:

Many people believe CBD isolate gives the most health benefits due to its purity. The other plant compounds don't seem like much, but in users, they actually prove that they boost CBD's effectiveness by working together to create what researchers call the "entourage effect." Full-spectrum is best for people with anxiety, depression, nausea, chronic pain, and illness, while isolate can be mixed with oil, used in edibles, or mixed into coffee. Either one is effective for people with Alzheimer's, who often suffer from anxiety, depression and a lack of appetite. Those who suffer from stress, PTSD, insomnia, and anxiety symptoms benefit from a dosage of 600 mg.

Research shows that CBD oil promotes new cell growth (neurogenesis) in the area of the brain linked to learning and memory as well as depression and anxiety (the hippocampus). Our bodies store our memories and emotions and function well with a healthy nervous system. CBD oil has had wonderful results on users who want to prevent or manage Alzheimer's disease by maintaining the mind-body connection.
