CBD is derived naturally from the marijuana plant. Throughout the United States, legalization has occurred on a much faster scale than the legalization of the parent plant. The reason CBD was able to hit the market as legal faster than marijuana is that CBD oil contains very slight traces of THC that allow it to be legal but does not come with any psychoactive properties that THC usually gives with marijuana. While most CBD products contain THC and alcohol, at Johnny Apple we are proud to say that our CBD products are made with 100% premium coconut-derived MCT oil and contain 0% THC and no alcohol.
You may ask, why legalize CBD and not legalize marijuana? Well, based on current and past research, CBD contains the legal amount of THC with no psychoactive properties and may be an alternative solution for people suffering from conditions like seizures, nausea, anxiety, depression, and yes, pain.
So, we have CBD legal in many states, and we have research telling us that the extract can benefit patients suffering from some conditions that may not otherwise be responding to, or responding well to, treatment, but where is the age range? Is CBD treatment only available for adults? Are children who suffer from seizures unable to use this treatment or is CBD something that is safe for people of all ages? Let’s take a more in-depth look into the history, past research, current research, and future of CBD to answer these questions.
Children
Just because you see a post on social media about a child having to travel across the United States to get CBD to treat seizures doesn't mean that CBD is safe for your child or any children. First and foremost, the primary authority when it comes to the safety of using CBD products for pain in children is your pediatrician. Unfortunately, using CBD in children is a relatively new concept. Your doctor may not be up on current research, which can make it challenging to find the answers you’re looking for.
According to Dr. Jennifer Lowry, a doctor well-versed in children’s health and medical toxicology, today’s pediatricians are not as likely to be educated on the medicinal uses of CBD in children as pediatric neurologists. She suggests finding a "cannabis consultant" who can work with your pediatrician to make the best choice for your child.
Teens
The use of CBD products for pain in teenagers is not as well-known or well researched as in adults. At this point, it appears teens are still caught up in the idea that CBD comes from marijuana so if you use CBD products you’ll get “high.” Eventually, this idea will fade away, and medical experience and societal knowledge will grow, and as research continues there will likely be a more widespread use of CBD products for pain, but there is no indication of such happening in teens just yet.
Adults
Now, we move on to the meat of the CBD industry: adults. Nearly 100% of the research you’ll find on the health benefits of CBD has been completed in men and women aged 18 and older. The same thing can be said for supplements and vitamins, so this is nothing new to the holistic market.
Research into the benefits of CBD is lacking at this time, but as the investigation moves into the human stages, we see benefits arise that can be replicated. For instance, the FDA has recently approved a CBD pill for the treatment of epilepsy. The only way the FDA would approve such a pill is if there is clinical research on humans to back up safety and efficacy. But, we’re talking about pain and not epilepsy. So, where does CBD stand regarding the treatment of pain?
Unfortunately, the search for effective use of CBD on pain came up empty. We found no current or past clinical research showing that regular use of CBD whether as an oil, tincture, wax, or cartridge, reduced pain. However, there are thousands of men and women across the United States, and the world, who use this natural extract as an alternative to prescription medications or as an addition to a current pain management regimen with good self-reported success.
So no, CBD is not shown, clinically, to fight pain. But, human research is still in the infancy stage, and it will be another five to 10 years before we can find the adequate research on just how many health benefits are associated with regular use of CBD oil and other CBD products.
